The American oligarchy is not coming—it is already here.
Just look at the cabinet President-elect Donald Trump has assembled. Like a ghoulish nightmare of hedge fund-running, libertarian mutants, they have come to destroy that which the rest of us hold dear: government in the public interest, a belief in the common good, and a democracy that works for working people, not the billionaires.
As we have reported, Bernie Sanders has said it very clearly in recent weeks. "This issue of oligarchy is the most important issue facing our country and world, because it touches on everything else."
He’s absolutely right. Just weeks from now, this horrifying band of oligarchs will be in control of many of the gears and levers of the U.S. government. We are right to be afraid, but we must not cower. Our work at Common Dreams will never be more vital than it is in the coming months, and our goal right now is to go into this storm as strongly as possible.
