This year has marked many milestones in the JFK International Airport project. Notably, the last steel beam was placed in the new terminal six, signifying that we are one step closer to completion. As the co-chair of the JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council. I was proud of the historic $2.3 billion in contracts to Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE). Meeks at Farmers Day Celebration in Queens, NY. | I had a great time fellowshipping with the community at Farmers Day in September. I was recognized for my service and leadership in Congress. It was amazing to be able to support all the small businesses in attendance and speak to residents about democratic priorities such as lowering grocery costs and other measures that support working families. | I led a tour of Hamilton Beach, Charles Park, and the Vetros areas with the National Park Service. Joined by state and local officials, we were able to survey the grounds and discuss the resources needed for the Gateway National Recreation Area. | Community Project Victories | If you would like to share your ideas for funding priorities for the upcoming fiscal year 2026 appropriations process, contact my office at Meeks.house.gov/contact. | In March, I voted to pass the bipartisan government funding legislation to allocate over $15 million for local projects in New York’s 5th District. House Democrats have been clear from the start of the 118th Congress that we are willing to work alongside our Republican colleagues to find common ground to pass meaningful policy. Through the spending bill, we also were able to support small businesses, families and seniors with funding for important local projects. For a full list of projects, visit here. | Lower Flood Insurance Costs for New Yorkers | I co-led the Community Flood Coverage Savings Act with Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY-02). The bill would create a community-based flood insurance pilot program at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), allowing communities to come together to purchase coverage that residents may not be able to afford on their own. More affordable flood insurance allows our communicates to better prepare for ever-evolving storms. To read more, click here. | The Mortgage Insurance Freedom Act | I introduced The Mortgage Insurance Freedom Act. This bill is designed to allow borrowers to stop paying Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insurance premiums (MIP) once they have built up a certain amount of equity in their home. To read more, visit here. | The Sexual Justice Tax Prevention Act | I introduced the Survivor Justice Tax Prevention Act. This legislation will amend the nation’s tax code to ensure survivors of sexual abuse and unwanted and illegal sexual contact do not have to pay taxes on settlement income when they prevail legally against their abuser. To read more, click here. | Financial Services Committee Hearing | I discussed President-Elect Trump's incompetent Cabinet nominees during a Financial Services Committee Hearing. | West Point Military Academy Cadets | I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point in my Washington, D.C., office to discuss domestic and abroad issues. I appreciate their service and dedication to keep Americans safe. | Around the World with Congressman Meeks | In July, I met with Haiti's acting Prime Minister, Garry Conille, during his visit to the United States. In light of the critical crossroads at which Haiti finds itself, I have been deeply engaged in efforts to restore security and address the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing the nation. The United States, in concert with international partners, must remain steadfast in its support of the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti to effectively bolster the Haitian national police’s efforts to address rampant gang violence. This mission is part of a broader effort to restore democratic governance and build a more prosperous future in Haiti that its people deserve. I am fully committed to standing with the people of Haiti and the Haitian diaspora as they shape the future of their nation. | Ranking Member Meeks traveled to Barbados with a Congressional delegation led by Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to celebrate Barbados’ 58th Independence Day and honor the 100th birthday of the late Shirley Chisholm, a trailblazing leader. The trip highlighted our shared Democratic values and the importance of the U.S.-Barbados bilateral relationship, from economic growth and tackling the scourge of climate change to regional security in the Caribbean.
