Dear John, As if we don’t have enough to worry about, ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) and the far right are waging a dark money campaign to force the first constitutional convention since 1787 in order to encase their radical Project 2025 agenda in the U.S. Constitution. Their goal? Lock in fossil fuel plutocrats’ control and “reverse 115 years of progressivism,” in the words of Mark Meckler, the Tea Party turned MAGA leader of Convention of States Action. The endgame would radically change America as we know it. To take a single example, one of the draft amendments conceived by the right-wing groups at a mock Constitutional Convention would allow a majority of state legislatures to nullify federal laws and regulations they don’t like. Think about it — politicians from 26 deep red states could steamroll the people we elected to Congress and do away with the Affordable Care Act and our civil rights, labor laws, and environmental protections. Here’s the problem: Virtually no one knows about this threat. That is where the Center for Media and Democracy comes in.
