In 2022, devastating floods destroyed homes and key infrastructure — but UNICEF had concrete emergency preparedness plans and pre-positioned supplies to rely on as part of its emergency response. In the immediate aftermath, emergency tents and water, sanitation and hygiene supplies ensured that children like 10-year-old Durgah could continue their education in temporary learning centers. In the years since, flexible funding has allowed investment in future sustainability and climate resilience in Pakistan.

As firewood became more scarce, young girls were forced to walk longer and longer distances in search of it — spending nearly three hours each day, preventing them from studying and putting them at risk of sexual violence. UNICEF launched a program to train teenage girls to source and manufacture a more environmentally friendly "green charcoal" to use instead of firewood, providing them with much needed income and protection.

As humanitarian crises and conflict compound, the unrelenting impact on children’s mental health have been devastating. UNICEF is working to build a holistic continuum of support for all children, ensuring they receive protection, mental health and psychosocial support services. In one year, this investment has allowed UNICEF to reach more than 63,000 children and caregivers, laying a foundation for long-term change.
