Dear John,
Happy holidays! I hope you’re getting a chance to relax and spend quality time with family and friends during this special time of year.
To me, Christmas is a time of reflection. I look back and consider everything we accomplished this year. I think about what’s happening in the community, and how we should move forward in the year ahead. But I also find it important to set aside everything work-related and be present with my loved ones.
Of course, the holidays are always hard without Jordan. He was taken from us too soon in a senseless shooting back in 2012, and every Christmas since has been painful to spend without him.
Jordan LOVED Christmas, and I have so many incredible memories of his holiday spirit. Every year we would go tree shopping together. Without fail, Jordan insisted on buying the biggest tree possible. The two of us – along with our dog, Freckles – would struggle to drag the enormous tree off the car and through the house, getting pine needles everywhere in the process.
The final step was placing a sheet over the presents that were under the tree. Freckles had a bad habit of peeing on the Christmas tree, so we had to take the precaution!
We don’t get much snow in Atlanta, so it was rare to have a “white Christmas”. But when we got even the smallest flurries, Jordan was the happiest kid in the world. He and his friends would craft makeshift sleds out of whatever we had lying around the house, and they would slide down the hill in our yard.
Being Jordan’s mom is the best thing to ever happen to me. I miss him every day, but especially during this time of year that he loved so much. And I promise to continue fighting to prevent other families from losing loved ones to gun violence.
John, I hope you cherish this time with your family and make some memories that will last a lifetime.
With love,
Lucy McBath
