Damning House ethics report released confirming Matt Gaetz — the man MAGA wanted to lead DOJ — paid thousands for drugs and sex while in office
Despite Gaetz and GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson's best efforts otherwise, the damning House ethics report detailing the Florida gasbag's many criminal activities finally saw the light of day yesterday after enough one-time allies changed course and secretly voted to release it. Investigators found “substantial evidence” that Gaetz violated House rules and other standards of conduct “prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.” The panel listed over $90,000 in payments to 12 women — including a 17-year-old — that the committee “determined were likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use.” The report found that Gaetz allegedly twice had sex with the 17-year-old, described as “Victim A,” at a 2017 party. She had just completed her junior year in high school. Really makes you wonder why in the world Speaker Johnson, pious family man and devout Christian that he is, worked so furiously behind the scenes to squash the report and in turn help Trump's chosen crony — a documented sexual predator — nearly become America's top law enforcement officer. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee claimed voters gave President-elect Donald Trump a "mandate" when she was asked about his wild remarks suggesting the United States simply seize control of the Panama Canal and that he would again attempt to "buy" Greenland. Blackburn's curious definition for mandate aside — Trump narrowly defeated Kamala Harris 49.9% to 48.4% — the Panama Canal cannot simply be taken by the United States. Formal control of one of the world's busiest shipping passageways was fully ceded to Panama in 1999, and no American voter mandate, phantom or otherwise, changes that pesky fact.

Judge rules Arkansas law allowing criminal charges against librarians is unconstitutional
US District Judge Timothy Brooks, a Barack Obama appointee, on Monday struck down key parts of an Arkansas law that would have allowed criminal charges against librarians and booksellers for providing “harmful” materials to minors. The law would have created a new process to challenge library materials and request that they be relocated to areas not accessible to children. The measure was signed by Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in 2023, but an earlier ruling had temporarily blocked it from taking effect while it was being challenged in court. “The law deputizes librarians and booksellers as the agents of censorship; when motivated by the fear of jail time, it is likely they will shelve only books fit for young children and segregate or discard the rest,” Brooks wrote in his ruling. Republican state Attorney General Tim Griffin said he will appeal the ruling.

Shane Lamond, the former leader of the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s intelligence division, was found guilty on Monday of obstructing justice and lying to federal investigators about leaking insider information to Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, the former leader of the extremist Proud Boys who is now serving 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy. Lamond and Tarrio were in regular contact throughout 2020 and leading up to Trump's failed insurrection on January 6, 2021.
