John: for many, the holiday season is full of gathering with family and friends, sharing presents, and reflecting on the year that’s been.
But, most domestic workers don’t make enough to give their families the holidays they deserve.
The average domestic worker is paid a little under $14 an hour, 81 percent of domestic workers nationwide lose pay if their employer cancels at the last minute, and one in six live in a household below the federal poverty line.
That’s why we’ve created this Season of Giving Fund to secure resources for campaigns that fight for a future where domestic workers and their families can celebrate the holidays without worry.
This holiday season, we know that being generous and compassionate goes a very long way. Can you make a donation today to the Season of Giving Fund to support our campaigns, including fighting to raise wages, put worker protections in place, and address wage theft?
Domestic workers — nannies, housecleaners, and direct care workers — sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers.
The work they do holds families and homes together but, for so many, it doesn’t pay for presents, food, and the extras that are nice to have during the holidays.
Our most recent survey showed 18 percent of domestic workers were out of work, 82 percent faced food insecurity, and 52 percent dealt with housing insecurity.
The critical work sector at the center of our economy and communities – who do the work that makes everything else possible – shouldn’t have to make impossible financial decisions ever, and especially during the holiday season.
