For many years we have been fighting, alongside allies around the world, for a radically different pharmaceutical system that puts public health needs above shareholder profits. And one that fosters collaboration between countries to develop treatments and vaccines that are accessible to all. This pandemic has underlined the importance of this fight.

Our campaign is now gaining attention from the media, world leaders, experts and parliament - are all of whom are questioning a pharmaceutical system that would profiteer from a Covid-19 vaccine. This is an important milestone as we get closer to finding a Covid-19 vaccine.

The only real hope of stopping this pandemic is in one of the many potential vaccines being developed right now. But even if a breakthrough happened tomorrow, there are no guarantees that all who need it would get it.

Global trade rules mean that big pharma will be able to monopolise the vaccine and name their price. It is in all our interests for any potential vaccine to be a global public good. Guaranteeing that those who need a vaccine get it means pushing governments to stand up to the pharmaceutical industry by ensuring patents don’t stand in the way of much-needed Covid-19 treatments and vaccines reaching those that need them.
 
Sadly, last week we discovered that the British government was trying to undermine the global push for patent-free vaccines. We’re pleased that ultimately, thanks to global campaigning, they supported a resolution at the World Health Assembly calling for equitable and universal access. But the campaign is by no means over – we now need to make these words into a reality.  
 
We’re working with allies around the world to make Covid-19 vaccines available for all. 140 world leaders are demanding it. Mainstream media is covering this. And tens of thousands of people have sent a message to our government to push for change.
