Friend,
It's been almost two months since the election, but damn, it still hurts.
After years of telling ourselves as a country that we're better than this, we once again have elevated a racist, vengeful, malevolent sociopath in cognitive decline who "represents everything we should aspire not to be" as President of the United States.
Now, we must grapple with the devastation to come and endure.
Within 24 hours of Trump's win, women were facing crass hate campaigns echoing the venom of white supremacist Nick Fuentes: "Your body, my choice. Forever."
There will be further attacks on working people, the poor, immigrant communities, trans kids, anti-war voices, political dissenters, champions for social justice, climate campaigners, the free press . . . every kind of “other” you can imagine. We’re facing vicious mass deportations and chaos for millions, massive tax giveaways to the wealthy and corporations, pardons for insurrectionists, and attacks on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
But while so many institutions have failed us—the corporate media, the Supreme Court, academia, the political parties—we cannot fail each other.
We are feeling our way through the sadness and horror, seeking a way forward. We are weary, hopeless, soul-scorched. We’ve needed time to process. Here in Maine, where Common Dreams is based, we've done a lot of walking and talking with friends in the woods or by the ocean, usually with dogs, who these days (as in all days) seem much happier than the rest of us.
And now it’s time to get to work. To go on offense. To fight.
For 16 years, I’ve written the Further column at Common Dreams. Tonight I’m writing to ask you to donate to the End-of-Year Campaign. We were on the front lines during the first Trump presidency, reporting the news every day to inform and inspire those fighting worldwide for a better future.
With your help, we’re ready to do it again. So are you with us? If so, please donate to our End-of-Year Campaign and help support the reader-funded journalism of Common Dreams. ([link removed])
