Friends,
Nine years ago, I was looking forward to meeting my constituents in a supermarket parking lot to talk about our district. Then, a gunman shot me and 18 of my constituents, ending six lives and damaging many more in a senseless act of gun violence. The road to recovery has been painful, long, and difficult. But I consider myself lucky to have escaped with my life – it breaks my heart that others did not.

After that, I dedicated my life to changing things, to making sure that the epidemic of gun violence in this country, which touched my life so directly that day, did not continue.

And this year, my fight to end gun violence also means this: Holding our gun-safety majority in the House, because the GOP is determined to put the gun lobby's agenda over even the most basic gun-safety measures like universal background checks.

Congresswoman Demings understands what's at stake – and why it matters. As police chief of Orlando, she saw firsthand how gun violence tears communities apart. And after the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016 took 49 innocent lives, she has continually made gun safety a priority in her legislative work.

And as Val put it so eloquently, "The pain of gun violence is overwhelming, but we must learn to transform it into love, progress and action." She's taking that action along with her colleagues in the House, and it's essential we help her continue this fight.
