United States Senator Mike Crapo - Idaho
*Let's Do Away With
Federal Overreach*
One of my priorities as U.S. Senator
representing the great people of Idaho has been to prevent federal
overreach into Idahoans' right to be left alone.
From navigating our
waterways to navigating ever-advancing technologies, banking services
and so much more, opportunities for the federal government to encroach
into our lives seem to abound.
Federal vaccine mandates are a
prime example.
You can find a list of efforts I have made to fight
against federal Covid-19 vaccine mandates *on my website here* [link

While we make progress in some areas, we must keep the
pressure on in others.

*The Government's "Ministry of Truth"*
During an April
28 House Judiciary Committee Hearing, U.S. Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the Department
had recently established a Disinformation Governance Board to combat
online disinformation.
Idahoans are rightfully concerned with the
Administration's attempt to brazenly establish a federal propaganda
panel under the guise of countering disinformation.
If the
Administration truly intended to counter disinformation threats to
national security, it would not have established this so-called
Disinformation Governance Board under a months-long veil of
secrecy.
This is an unconstitutional waste of taxpayer dollars and a
threat to free speech.
I co-sponsored two pieces of legislation,
S. 4124 [link 3] and S. 4191 [link 4], which would prohibit the use of
any federal funds for the establishment of a Disinformation Governance
Board.
Further, I co-signed a letter to the Senate Appropriations
Subcommittee on Homeland Security to prohibit any funding for the
board in the Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations bill.
Although the board
has been paused for now, I will continue to fight against this latest
example of government overreach.
*The President Must Take Steps to
Secure the Border Now*

[link 5]
The southern border saw a record high of two million
illegal border crossings in 2021.
Without stronger enforcement of our
immigration laws, the numbers are expected to skyrocket again this
year.
Watch a recent video statement I gave by clicking *HERE* [link
6] or the image above, or read more *on my website here* [link
7]*.*
I have recently supported a number of efforts to combat
illegal immigration, specifically with regard to Title 42, a public
health order prohibiting entry into the U.S. by those posing health
risks such as Covid-19.
The Administration is set to rescind the
order next week without any plan in place to combat a further surge at
the southern border.
-
I signed a *letter* [link 8] to U.S.
Department of Homeland Security demanding information on the
Department's plan to secure the border once the Biden Administration
rescinds Title 42.
-
I o-sponsored the *Stop Fentanyl Border
Crossings Act* [link 9] to expand Title 42 authority to turn back
migrants to combat prolific drug smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico
border.
The soaring increase in drug overdose deaths in the last year
is a public health crisis.
Mexico is a major source of the illicit
flow of fentanyl into the United States, and more must be done to stop
this deadly substance from entering our country.
-
I also
co-sponsored legislation to *extend the Title 42* [link 10] authority
at the nation's southern border until February 2025.
This ongoing
crisis commands a stronger, more effective leadership.
The President
must take steps to secure the border **now**.
*Sky-High
Inflation*
Prices rose by 8.3 percent between April 2021 and April
2022, according to the latest inflation data from the Bureau of Labor
Statistics.
While April inflation was slightly lower than in March,
it remains close to the highest inflation rate the U.S. has seen in 40
years and is no cause for celebration.
As the *Wall Street Journal*
[link 11] Editorial Board put it: "If this means we've reached 'peak'
inflation, we're merely fallen from Mount Everest to K2."
This
inflationary environment preceded Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and
has outpaced inflation in other developed countries in no small part
due to the outsized, unnecessary spending in the Democrats' American
Rescue Plan.
Instead of learning from their reckless spending spree,
Democrats are attempting to resurrect failed tax-and-spend proposals
that will only cause further economic damage as recession risks are
rising.
The best course of action for combatting inflation and
consumer pain at the gas pump and in the grocery aisles is to get
spending under control, avoid gimmicks such as a gas tax holiday that
would starve the Highway Trust Fund and provide little consumer
relief, and allow American energy producers to produce.

*Supporting
Police*
The rise in police deaths nationwide reinforces the need to
support police officers.
My column condemning liberal efforts to
defund the police as well as expressing the importance of the role
police officers have in making our communities safe recently appeared
in the *Washington Times* [link 12].
