Update on the Fight for
Religious Liberty in the US
Dear Friend,
“With God’s
Help…” said Paul Jonna,
when I asked him to explain how he is going to win the two crucial
civil liberties cases he is fighting in the courts right now. Mr.
Jonna partners with our friend and long-time ally, Chuck Limandri, as
counsel at the Thomas More Society. This organizations mission is to
fight for religious and civil liberties of people of conscience who
are persecuted by the godless Left in our country.
Attorney Jonna knows that we are
fighting against the “principalities and powers of this world of
darkness” (Eph 6:12) which are fundamentally opposed to God, so it is
only possible to defeat them by relying on the power of God’s
grace.
In this episode of Catholic Action Insight Paul Jonna offers an extremely interesting
update for us on two cases in southern California that are not only of
interest to Californians but also have potential national implications
for religious liberties.
Case 1 involves a horrific
statewide gender policy in schools that drives a wedge between parents
and schools. The state mandate requires public schools to
unhesitatingly affirm the self-asserted “gender identity” of children
as young as kindergarten age without an obligation to inform the
parents.
You read that right:
parents are in the category of those with “no need
to know” about this decision on behalf of their own
children!
This parental exclusion policy is
utterly outrageous for decent people of any stripe, but the Thomas
More Society is defending two devout Christian teachers who objected
to the policy and have been negatively disciplined by their school
district.
In the interview, Paul Jonna boils
down these complex legal matters into clear layman’s terms. He
summarizes:
- The
court’s groundbreaking preliminary injunction from last September that
stopped the enforcement of this policy
-
The violation of his clients’
1st and 14th Amendment
constitutional rights, as well as
- The
long-term and wide-spread implications of a win for our
side.
Let’s just say the far-Left
educational establishment is so threatened by this case that it has
unleashed an army of lawyers funded by tax-payer dollars to fight the
Thomas More Society. They know they have everything to lose, but Jonna
is nonetheless very optimistic about the case, which is hopeful for
all of us.
The second case involves the
persecution of an L.A. County lifeguard who refused to raise the
mandated “Progress Pride Flag” on his lifeguard tower when the state
forced the issue in June of last year.
The lifeguard said it violated his
Christian convictions and asserted correctly that the law allowed for
such conscientious accommodations to religious values.
The antagonists of the Left,
however, were having none of it. What immediately followed were his
suspension, removal, harassment, intimidation, retaliation, and even
death
threats against his
family. The lifeguard is lucky that the Thomas More Society took his
case, and you will find Mr. Jonna’s update on this case to be gripping
and informative.
Paul Jonna is right: there is no
way to succeed in the public arena other than “With God’s Help….” Given the importance of these cases, they
must succeed, so I am calling for huge amounts
of prayer for the team at the Thomas More Society, their clients, and
all the legal complexities of the cases.
With God on our side and
professional men like Paul Jonna in our camp, our hope remains
firm.
