Hudbay Minerals: Mining with impunity in times of Covid19
Messages from mining harmed communities in Peru and Guatemala

“Hudbay can continue to play with our poverty and suffering but we will continue to fight
on this long road in search for justice and dignified reparation
for all the harm they caused in 2007 and 2009.”
(Angelica Choc, one of 13 plaintiffs in Hudbay lawsuits)

On May 22, 2020, Hudbay holds its AGM. The executive team will try to reassure the board and investors that Hudbay remains profitable.

Financial benefits are the concern.
Not for Hudbay harmed people and communities in Peru and Guatemala.

As Hudbay gathers to talk profits, they were caught trying to cover-up an outbreak of Covid19 at their ‘La Constancia’ mine in Peru: [link removed].

In January 2020, after yet another court decision against Hudbay in favour of Mayan Q’eqchi’ plaintiffs from Guatemala, CEO and president Peter Kukielski told the Financial Post there was “no doubt” Hudbay would settle the landmark Hudbay lawsuits: “We obviously want to get that behind us.” ([link removed])

Within weeks of Kukielski stating that Hudbay would settle, Hudbay’s team of lawyers at Faskens filed a motion to appeal the decision.
