The Innocence Project applauds President Biden’s historic decision to commute the sentences of 37 men on federal death row.

More than 200 innocent people were exonerated from death rows across the country. Others were not so fortunate, like our client Marcellus Williams in Missouri who was executed despite the lack of evidence linking him to the crime for which he was wrongfully convicted. The flaws that permeate the state systems – including racial bias, unreliable science, police and prosecutorial misconduct – also plague the federal capital punishment system.

As United States Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun said some 30 years ago, it is time to “concede that the death penalty experiment has failed.”

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism.
