Experts estimate there are likely more than 1 million orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells in the U.S. that can leak oil, gas and other toxic chemicals into our air, soil and water.

Orphaned and abandoned wells put the safety of the millions who live nearby at risk. Children who live, learn and play near these wells are especially vulnerable to health impacts.

Your support helps slash oil and gas methane pollution, including from orphaned and abandoned wells, by leveraging sensors and data to find wells, plug leaks, hold polluters accountable and protect the health of millions of people.

In Pennsylvania, where there could be as many as 700,000 hidden orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells, EDF, Moms Clean Air Force and our partners are piloting a project aimed at quickly and efficiently locating and characterizing these wells.

And we’ve found hundreds so far. In 2023 and 2024, more than 200 wells were plugged in PA with federal funds EDF helped secure. That’s more than the last six years combined!

By plugging orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells, we can create jobs, protect groundwater, raise property values, cut climate pollution, improve our health and create a brighter future for ourselves and our children.
