Keeping Clients and Staff as Safe as Possible
A message from Maureen Devine-Ahl, Doorways Interim President and CEO
I wanted to take a moment to reach out and update you on where Doorways is as an agency in light of the re-opening conversations starting to happen around us.
Doorways is, of course, abiding by Governor Northam's recent ruling to delay Northern Virginia's entry into Phase One, and we are remaining in our current remote work and minimum staffing efforts.
How do state and local timelines influence Doorways' timeline?
Keeping Doorways' staff and clients safe remains the top priority for Doorways' board and executive leadership. We will continue to operate to minimize risk, making decisions that are best for our agency, informed by state and local policies, regional partners, and our team's experiences on the frontlines.
Yes! I encourage you to visit www.DoorwaysVA.org/covid-19 to access resources to help community members who may be in need of Doorways' services connect with us.
Staff are working from our facilities for essential shifts or tasks to ensure continued support and services for our clients, and supporting clients staying in hotels, supportive housing, or participating in our Revive counseling program (now through virtual telehealth sessions).
I am grateful to our staff for their continued work to serve clients and keep everyone safe and healthy during this time. All of us at Doorways thank each of you for supporting our team, especially now. We appreciate you!

Has domestic violence increased during the pandemic?
—Samantha Clarke, MPA, LCSW, Doorways' Chief Program Officer

Domestic Violence Calls Mount as Restrictions Linger: 'No One Can Leave'
"The coronavirus has created new tensions. Staying at home has worsened abusive situations. (...) "Some victims of violence are anticipating that stay-at-home orders will be lifted before long, and are making plans for when that day will come."
Why a Drop in Domestic Violence Reports Might Not Be a Good Sign
"The drop in reports is far from reassuring, officials said, and law enforcement officials and social workers say there are some signs strife is quietly escalating behind closed doors."
