What a year it’s been.

While America is undoubtedly experiencing massive political and cultural shifts—Trump set to return to office, a bold new transition team in formation, and the era of “woke” arguably in retreat—our mission at Independent remains the same: to boldly advance peaceful, prosperous, and free societies grounded in a commitment to human worth and dignity.

I’m proud of all that we’ve accomplished this year and excited about our plans for the year ahead. Let me share a bit about what we have in store.

First, Independent will continue to fight the resurgence of socialist ideology on the Left. Although these economic systems were thoroughly discredited in the 20th century, they remain fashionable in our universities and among media elites. This has sadly resulted in a rehabilitation of socialism/Marxism in the eyes of younger generations, as well as a decline in confidence in the free market system. Our aim is to make the positive case for markets both in the U.S. and abroad, while reminding the world of the human tragedy and economic ruin of socialism.

Unfortunately, some on the political Right have abandoned sound economics in favor of tariffs, industrial subsidies, and other failed relics of economic central planning. Independent intends to hold their feet to the fire in the coming year through principled research that reiterates the case for free trade.

As our nation emerges from the worst inflationary crisis in 40 years, we will continue pressing the case for monetary stability and fiscal restraint. Judy Shelton’s masterful Good as Gold: How to Unleash the Power of Sound Money will remain at the front of our efforts to this end. We are grateful to have Dr. Shelton on our side.

Finally, I'm excited to announce that we will be hosting a scholar's summit this May in California to strategize on new research initiatives, including mounting the case against government surveillance, exploring strategies for cutting government spending and eliminating bloated bureaucracies, and launching a new project on liberty in the American West.

Those are our plans. But surprises and unexpected challenges are bound to arise—they always do. When they do, we’ll meet them with the same principles we’ve always championed: those of peace, prosperity, liberty and human dignity.
