After surviving the suicide loss of her dear friend and colleague in 2004, Lisa Riley joined a grassroots effort to organize an American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Saratoga, New York, in memory of her friend. The Walk was extremely successful, raising awareness and funds for this leading cause of death. The Capital Region Community Walk still takes place 20 years later, continuing to be one of AFSP’s most successful Community Walk events.

Lisa has continued to volunteer to this day. In 2006, Lisa served as the lead, founding executive board officer for the AFSP-Capital Region, New York chapter, and in 2015 became the founding chair of AFSP’s New Hampshire Chapter. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Physician Assistant Studies Program at MCPHS University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lisa’s story is just one example of the meaning and impact created by our dedicated volunteers in local chapters across the country – and a testament to AFSP’s continued work in saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.

Thanks to the support and generosity of donors like you, AFSP has served as a leader in the fight against suicide for more than 35 years. As our 2024 year comes to a close, we are reflecting on the great work accomplished by our team, volunteers, advocates, scientists and communities across the country working together to create hope and prevent suicide.

Volunteers like Lisa Riley work tirelessly for our mission, driven by loss and the hope for others. Join Lisa in making your gift today.
