We achieved this together - and it's a historic win against capital punishment.

ACLU Supporter, we've made history: President Biden has just commuted the sentences of 37 people on federal death row. <[link removed]>

This is an extraordinary victory – one made possible by the hundreds of thousands of voices across the political and faith spectrums, including more than 130 civil and human rights organizations, faith leaders, exonerees, family members of victims, and law enforcement officials – and ACLU supporters like you, all urging the President to take action.

We've said it long before now and we will continue saying it: The death penalty is immoral, error-prone, and racially biased. It also drains our public resources and fails to make our communities safer. Today's decision to commute these death sentences shows our country – and the rest of the world – that the brutal and inhumane policies of our past do not belong in our future.

This decision also comes less than a month until Inauguration Day.

In his last term, President-elect Trump oversaw more executions than any other president in 120 years. By commuting these sentences today, President Biden has taken away his power to oversee another execution spree.

This is also why the ACLU both lauds Biden's announcement today – and knows we must do everything to prepare for what's ahead. We will be ready on day one of the incoming Trump administration to challenge any unconstitutional expansion of capital punishment or return to torturous methods of execution – building on our ongoing federal and state-level fights to end one of the most flawed and inhumane mechanisms of the U.S. criminal legal system.

President Biden's decision today is a historic win, but there is still more to be done. State-sanctioned killing does not make us safer, and we will not stop fighting until we end the death penalty once and for all.

You can read our full statement on today's decision here – and we'll continue to keep you updated on this crucial work ahead. <[link removed]>
