Shift-work policies and chronic health conditions in the manufacturing industry



Numerous studies have shown that 12-hour shifts, rotating shifts, and unpredictable work schedules are associated with greater risk of chronic health conditions. In a new systematic review with meta-analyses, researchers at Northwestern University find shift work and long work hours increase the risk of breast cancer and stroke. The evidence remains unclear on other chronic conditions.

Increasing healthy food access in low-income neighborhoods



P4A research shows that encouraging discount variety stores (DVS) to become authorized Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) vendors has the potential to modestly increase DVS sales and the availability of healthy foods in low-income neighborhoods. If WIC authorization is financially viable for small-format variety stores, encouraging similar small-format variety stores to become WIC authorized could improve food access.
