It’s not too late to give the gift of support for youth activists in 2024
Dear John,
It’s no exaggeration to say that in 2024, homophobic and transphobic politicians worked to legislate LGBTQ+ young people out of existence. They passed “don’t say gay or trans” bills, banned health care for trans young people, and even banned books about being LGBTQ+ from classrooms. The harm has been immeasurable. But youth activists like me are fighting back however we can.
I’m a part of Advocates' YouthResource, a leadership program designed by and for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people of color. YouthResource members are working to make sure our communities are safe and that LGBTQ+ young people are affirmed and celebrated for who they are. We are sharing our stories and building community to support LGBTQ+ young people.
Part of my work with Advocates has been to expand the resources from Hope in a Box, a project that helps educators across the country fight book bans and homophobia/transphobia by building inclusive classroom libraries and incorporating books with LGBTQ+ themes into lessons. Finding representation in culture is important for every young person, and especially for LGBTQ+ youth living in today’s hostile political environment. I’m proud to be working with Advocates for Youth to make sure classrooms are safer spaces for queer youth of color and that all young people get to see themselves reflected in what they learn in school.
Activists like me are leading the fight to make sure LGBTQ+ youth are safe, supported, and celebrated. Please donate to support my work in 2025!
Thank you,
Amaka
