Dear John,
Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen Campaign Director Karen Salazar knows firsthand the border’s potential for progressive change. While still in college, Karen first started organizing with Ground Game Texas in 2022 as a field organizer for the Living Wage campaigns in the cities of Alton and Edinburg. She then assisted other campaigns, knocking doors in El Paso for the Climate Charter, and serving on the data verification teams for initiatives in San Antonio and Lubbock.
This wealth of experience served Karen well this year in leading Ground Game’s first-ever ballot initiative campaign aimed at increasing direct participation in local democracy. The campaign was the product of conversations with residents and community organizations across Hidalgo County who expressed their lack of confidence in government and frustration with corruption in politics.
Once the campaign was underway, there was predictably a great deal of opposition from those comfortable with the status quo. Despite this opposition, Proposition A, to adopt campaign contribution limits, won this November with 56% support. Proposition B, grants voters the direct democracy powers of initiative, referendum, and recall, passed with 67%.
Without your support, the in-depth years-long organizing that it took to achieve victory in McAllen this year would not have been possible. Ground Game Texas is proud to be able to provide a place for young leaders like Karen to develop their skills and grow professionally. Your contribution allows us to do this work throughout the state, including in the RGV. Your continued investment in our work will allow us to reach even greater heights in 2025.
