John,

Gun violence is impacting far too many Americans -- across the country and right here in Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday, a gunman injured six police officers in a shootout in North Philly. In our region last week, one individual was killed and more than a dozen were shot, including a 19-year-old shot in the legs at the City Hall SEPTA Station.

We need to act immediately to end the spiral of violence.

The recent shootings in Dayton and El Paso made it clear that we need to reinstate the national ban on assault rifles -- but there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to the gun violence epidemic. In addition to an assault weapons ban, we need community-focused solutions that implement universal background checks, provide more robust community mental health services, and work closely with our local law enforcement.

These common-sense reforms are long overdue. We need legislation that will both respect the provisions of the Second Amendment and save lives -- and we need it before our communities suffer yet another unnecessary tragedy.

That’s why the Judiciary Committee announced today that we will be coming back early from August recess to work on legislative fixes to the gun violence epidemic. The House has already passed legislation to improve background checks and close “the boyfriend loophole” that allows domestic abusers to keep guns -- so long as they don’t marry their victims! We need the Senate to vote on those bills, but our work is not done. When my committee returns to Washington, we will begin preparing several bills, including reauthorization of the assault weapons ban, to be ready for a floor vote when the full House reconvenes.

Now is a time for action, not empty promises or insincere “thoughts and prayers” -- so we’re getting right back to work to protect our country, our communities, and our children.
