As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on the year’s milestones—achievements, challenges, and the tireless efforts of our global community in advancing human rights for LGBTIQ+ people. OutSummit 2024 was a powerful reminder of our collective courage, resilience, and commitment to equality, offering clear pathways to continue our work despite the obstacles ahead. The inspiring voices of our speakers highlighted the unwavering spirit that drives us forward.
Looking ahead, our movement remains rooted in the belief that every person, regardless of identity, deserves to live freely, openly, and with dignity. In this newsletter, we share our Human Rights Day statement, reflect on the insights from OutSummit 2024, and explore how the rise of globalized anti-rights forces are impacting legal battles for LGBTIQ+ equality. We also highlight the ongoing fight for intersex rights in our recent report, "I Am" Intersex: Global Voices for Intersex Justice. This critical work continues because of the strength and support of our community—thank you for standing with us.

Outright International’s latest report highlights findings from investigations in Argentina, Ecuador, and Guatemala on conversion practices aimed at changing or suppressing sexual orientation or gender identity. Identified as a form of gender-based violence, these harmful practices—often framed as “therapeutic”—cause severe psychological, emotional, and physical harm. Despite legal protections, these practices persist, fueled by cultural and religious justifications. The report calls for stronger legal safeguards, public awareness, and institutional accountability to protect LGBTQ individuals and challenge these violent practices across the region.

Outright’s Queer Legal Futures team reviews the last quarter’s global LGBTIQ legal progress, focusing on the rise of globalized anti-rights forces. These are coordinated efforts across different countries to undermine the rights of LGBTIQ people through legislation, litigation, and manipulation of public sentiment. These forces, which include transnational groups like the Political Network for Values, U.S. politicians seeking to prohibit trans health care, and legislators advancing hostile laws in countries ranging from Slovakia to Bulgaria to Ghana, often use vague laws and rhetoric to target LGBTIQ communities, restrict their rights, and incite discrimination and violence. Explore Rights in Retrograde to uncover how these threats demand a united response in 2025.
