Donald Trump has chosen a nominee for Secretary of Education who has little professional experience in education policy to serve in the role. Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon (yes, from the wrestling entertainment empire) is not qualified to make decisions that will impact millions of students across the country.
Like so many of Trump’s nominees, Linda McMahon is a billionaire who has been put forward to lead our government because Trump knows she’ll do his bidding.
Linda McMahon is a strong advocate for school voucher programs. These programs take money from already underfunded public schools and give that money to schools that have a history of rejecting students that require more resources to educate. Public schools are legally obligated to protect students from discrimination, harassment, and bullying, but private schools are not held to the same standards.
The Department of Education plays a vital role in distributing and monitoring public spending on education, working to ensure equal access to education for all students, collecting performance data on America’s students and schools so that resources can be equitably allocated, and more. Eliminating the Department of Education – as called for in Project 2025 that McMahon is being put in place to implement - would have catastrophic impacts on students, teachers, schools, and families.
Strong schools are our promise to the next generation. It is our civic responsibility to protect the Department of Education from these sinister right-wing attacks.
