Civil rights, the rule of law, and a fair justice system will all face urgent challenges in this new political era. The fight for a better democracy has to evolve.

The Brennan Center was built for this moment. We’ve worked to curb abuses of power and defended the Constitution throughout our 30-year history. We know how to win this fight. We will champion reforms that build a stronger, thriving democracy. In 2025, we will expand our work in the states. State lawmakers are best positioned to pass pro-voter legislation, and state courts can protect and expand the rights enshrined in their constitutions. Governors, mayors, and state attorneys general will be able to exercise their power to resist federal overreach.

We had critical wins in 2024 — the passage of legislation that protects California voters against intimidation at the polls, the beginnings of a new program that will remove barriers to jobs and housing for New Yorkers with a criminal record, and the expansion of small donor public financing to make politicians more responsive to the needs of their constituents.
