Our nation faced yet another dangerous incident this past week where the
federal government was hours away from shutting down because of a failure of
our elected leaders to address our nation's budget.

John,
This past week, our nation came uncomfortably close to a government
shutdown—another example of how our leaders are struggling to address the
budget responsibly and tackle key issues facing our country.
These situations arise because both parties in Congress have avoided
meaningful discussions about curbing government spending and addressing our $36
TRILLION national debt.
As a former chairman of the House Budget Committee, in the 1990s, I worked
across the aisle to help balance the federal budget for the first time since
man walked on the moon, proving that collaboration and compromise can lead to
real solutions when leaders put the country first.
