Adam Schiff for Senate

John — we avoided a government shutdown by the skin of our teeth. No thanks to Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Republicans.

Here’s a brief summary of what has transpired — and who is responsible for this disaster:

GOP Congressional leaders delayed putting together a budget (in this case, a continuing resolution) to keep the government open — because they know their own party members can’t agree among themselves.

In the 11th hour, Speaker Mike Johnson finally agreed to a bipartisan deal to keep the government open for a few more months.

Then, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy immediately threw this agreement out the window. They started fanning the flames — even before Donald Trump spoke out — and Republicans started doing what they always do — falling in line. (Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk tanked the bipartisan bill that had disaster aid, while supporting the defense bill with all the billions for his company, SpaceX. He suggested no cuts there.)

Donald Trump then stepped in with the following threat: “Any Republican that would be so stupid as to [pass a clean Continuing Resolution] should, and will, be Primaried.”

It’s an absolute mess, John. The circus is back in town — early.

If you’re the world’s richest man like Musk, I guess it doesn’t bother you too much when ordinary people don’t get paid and services shut down. But average families would have been the ones to suffer the consequences.

Luckily, Speaker Johnson and Republicans capitulated under another last-minute deal and we avoided the shutdown — for now. Speaker Johnson can thank House Democrats for helping put the country before partisan politics.

But this is just the beginning. We can expect even more drama and chaos from Republican leaders over the next two years, especially as Elon Musk governs by tweet. That’s why, as much as I will be focused on keeping the government open and functioning for us all, I will also be working to flip control of the Senate and the House from red to blue.

Will you chip in an early contribution today to help bring back some order to our government? Any amount will help me and my team support Democrats over the coming years as we work to take back control of Congress.
