Can you believe Christmas is in just a few days? As I make final preparations, I’m reflecting on how this celebration deeply shapes our pro-life work.

John,

Can you believe Christmas is in just a few days? As I make final preparations, I’m reflecting on how this celebration deeply shapes our pro-life work.

Mary was just a teenager when the angel Gabriel appeared to her. She gave her “yes” to God’s plan even though she did not understand how it was going to happen or what the future would look like.

Joseph was concerned when he heard about Mary’s pregnancy. He trusted the reassuring message he was given in a dream and gave his “yes” even though he, too, did not know what it would mean for his life.

They both experienced uncertainty in their situation, but they chose to trust God’s plan. They both chose selfless courage instead of the enclosement that comes with self-centered fear.

As a result, the greatest gift to humankind entered the world as one of us, lived, and died for us, opening the doors of salvation forever.

God could have chosen to come to us in an extraordinary, magnificent manner… but He came in the most humble, hidden, and vulnerable way imaginable – as a tiny preborn child.

God came to us by way of Mary’s unexpected pregnancy.

As we celebrate the birth of the Christ Child this Christmas, let’s take a moment to imagine ourselves in the manger scene. Mary had to give birth to the God of the universe among animals because there were no rooms available. Joseph, tasked with the care of Mary and the Son of God, probably felt like a failure with so many rejections at such a critical moment.

While we might have many tangible or emotional burdens during this time of year… let’s remember that Mary and Joseph were also burdened with practical responsibilities and lack of resources.

Yet, let’s also remember that the joy of Christ’s birth outweighed all of their burdens – and it outweighs all of ours, as well.

This truth is ultimately why the pro-life cause is directly tied to Christmas. Every new life is a gift from God and should be protected at all costs – even when there are uncertainties and burdens.

As we approach Christmas Day, let’s pray for the peace of the Christ Child that goes deeper than any challenge or suffering. And, let’s allow our resolution to end abortion to be reignited.

May God bless you in this beautiful season!
