The right to vote is fundamental to American democracy.

As we prepare for an election this fall while continuing to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, it's critical we do everything we can to safeguard that right. It's time for Congress to act -- and in doing so, we can take lessons from the successes of the past.

27 years ago today, the National Voter Registration Act -- more commonly referred to as the "Motor Voter Act" -- was signed into law. It allows Americans to register to vote whenever they apply for a new driver's license or anywhere that provides public assistance, making voting easier and more accessible for millions of Americans.

Vote-by-mail should be the next step. Washington state has already demonstrated how successful it can be, and implementing it nationwide would make voting accessible to millions of people without forcing them to choose between their vote and their health. I'm fighting hard to make that a reality, but I need your help:

This initiative and this work are often hailed as "progressive" -- but it should be about bipartisan progress, not red vs. blue.

Americans have a constitutional right to the ballot box, no matter which party they vote for, and the Motor Voter Act recognized that by making it easier to register to vote. Now we need to take another step forward and have nationwide vote-by-mail. Fifty million Americans already vote by mail, and here in Washington state we all do. It's safe, easy, and effective.
