John,

Just two days after the 12th anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we saw another community irrevocably changed by gun violence as two people were killed and six others were injured in the mass shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Wisconsin.

It’s no wonder that almost 80% of parents are worried that their child’s school will become the site of the next mass shooting. But we don’t have to live like this.

While gun violence is the number one killer of kids in this country, we have evidence-based solutions. We need to pass and defend gun safety legislation that will protect our schools and our communities — including safe storage laws which are critical given that 76% of school shooters under the age of 18 get their guns from the home. We also need to hold the gun industry accountable and to the same standards as every other industry in America. And we need to change our culture to shift norms and behaviors around firearms.

While we’ve made life-saving progress at both the state and federal levels, we must all remain vigilant in protecting this progress over the next four years.

We owe it to our children to prevent the next tragedy before it happens. [[link removed]]

Data Shows Unintentional Shootings Increase Over the Holidays

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and family togetherness. But the holiday season also comes with increased risks from unsecured firearms.

According to our analysis, the week of Christmas (December 24-31) and the first week of the New Year (January 1-7) are among the biggest spikes in unintentional shootings of the entire year.

These instances of family fire, or a shooting that results from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home, increase over the holidays because people are more often at home or visiting the homes of friends and family. There is also often an increase in alcohol consumption and firearm purchasing.

The best way to prevent these tragedies is through safe storage – storing firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition.

Today, 4.6 million children live in homes with firearms and one-third of adolescents report they can access a loaded firearm in under five minutes. For children this holiday season, the excitement of searching for presents or playing in an unfamiliar environment can quickly turn into tragedy if all firearms are not stored securely.

The best way to celebrate the holidays this year is to make sure your firearms are safely stored and to have conversations with friends and family about safe storage. To help with these conversations, check out our webpage to learn more. [[link removed]]

NEW POLL: Majority of Trump Voters Support Gun Safety

As we mourn yet another school shooting, new Brady polling [[link removed]] reveals a stark truth: Americans, including Trump voters, overwhelmingly support stronger gun safety measures.

Our polls revealed that [[link removed]] :

73% of Trump voters support stronger background checks

83% of voters support requiring lost/stolen firearms be reported to law enforcement

69% of voters support temporarily limiting firearms access for people in crisis

80% of voters support safe storage requirements in homes with children

Our polling also found that the majority of Trump voters were unaware of his gun policy plans when voting – and when informed, they rejected proposals that would weaken existing protections.
These numbers tell us something crucial: Common-sense gun safety isn't partisan. It's what Americans want, regardless of political affiliation.

These numbers also give us hope for the next four years. In the face of immediate threats to roll back our nation’s gun laws and institute a dangerous “guns everywhere” agenda, we must come together to fight for a safer America. This polling shows that we can find common ground and support to maintain key policies that protect our communities.
