"From day one I decided, I'm not going to close. We are only about eight staff in the kitchen, and most of them have been with me for 16 years. I looked at their faces, and I could see fear. I told them, no matter what happens, I’ll get a loan or whatever but we’re not going to close down."

Among its flaws, the Democratic coronavirus relief bill—called the HEROES Act—threatens to undermine the increased workplace flexibility and accommodations that workers and employers alike need to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Their sweeping bill includes a full-year extension of what was supposed to be a temporary mandate on small businesses to provide up to 12 weeks of paid sick and family leave to all workers. Mandates like this derail the organic process of businesses finding ways to meet their unique situations and needs—and put further financial strains on businesses trying to stay afloat and save or create jobs.

When Dallas beautician Shelley Luther of the A La Mode Salon defied a stay-at-home order to try to save her business and the jobs of her employees, a smug judge threw her in jail. Luther isn’t the only beautician to defy a stay-at-home decree in the name of preserving her livelihood and that of her employers.

The novel coronavirus has changed American life in important and lasting ways. Americans have become newly aware of the tremendous threat that pandemics, and other unexpected events, pose to our way of life. This week, IWF sent our Restoring the American Dream of Health, Happiness and Opportunity in a World with Coronavirus plan to every congressional office.
The government cannot continue to borrow and throw trillions of dollars in an attempt to paper over the damage caused by coronavirus and the economic shutdown. Rather, we need positive solutions to create a framework and a better environment to encourage innovation and hard work, so our country comes back stronger than ever before.

Biden tapped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to co-chair his climate change task force, which suggests that a version of the Green New Deal, which she authored, is all but inevitable under a Biden presidency. If the coronavirus pandemic hit us 10 years from now and the Green New Deal were written into law, states would be mandated to phase out coal, nuclear energy, and natural gas to generate 100% of power demand from zero-emission energy sources, which to Democrats means renewables only.

The innovation charter schools provide and encourage is especially important now. During the pandemic, charter schools have stepped up to the plate, some sharing innovative virtual and hybrid models with any willing districts, and expanding in states that have allowed them to do so in order to flexibly serve families during this time.
