As we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, we can learn a great deal from the example set by Jesus

Good morning John,

Lindsay and I have just recorded a Christmas themed Lions Roar podcast which will be available in all the usual places ([link removed]) on Monday.

It explored the meaning of Christmas and the traditions and disasters at Christmas in our house.

Amid the hustle and bustle of this time, and the increasing commercialisation and secularisation of the Christmas period, it serves us all well to reflect upon the hope, love, and selflessness that lie at the heart of the true meaning of Christmas.

It’s a time to reflect on the humility and sacrifice of Jesus, who came into the world not to be served, but to serve. He came as the greatest gift for all mankind. His example continues to inspire us to reach out to others, particularly those in need, with compassion and generosity.

This year has been one of challenges and change. Politically, we have faced difficult decisions and moments. We continue to work at healing the divisions within Northern Ireland that have scarred our society and political landscape for so long. Again, we can learn a lesson from the Christmas story, as it reminds us of the importance of goodwill and grace.

For those of us who serve the public, it is a reminder of the humility and integrity required to lead with purpose and to act in the interests of others above self.

When I look at the challenges in our health service and our infrastructure, there must be a collective effort to fix the problems for the good of all our people.

It’s interesting that Mary and Joseph were travelling back for a census to enable tax rises. As I look ahead to 2025, the Government seems determined to tax us all to death whilst wasting millions on their pet projects. We will stand against this.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who work tirelessly over the Christmas period, often at great personal and family sacrifice. From healthcare workers and emergency services to carers, transport staff, and those in retail and hospitality, your dedication ensures that others are cared for, kept safe, and supported.

For those in our armed forces spending time abroad, away from family, we thank you especially for your service and sacrifice not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year.

Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful and blessed Christmas.
