What We’ve Accomplished in 2024 for the 5th District
Dear Friend,
As we close out 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made for the Fifth District of Minnesota. This year has been filled with both accomplishments and challenges, and I remain committed to fighting for justice, equity, and dignity for all Minnesotans, no matter what lies ahead.

Delivering for Our Community
I was proud to secure $12,798,779 in Community Project Funding for 15 projects right here in the Fifth District. This funding was included in the House-passed 2024 government appropriations package and responds directly to the most pressing needs of our communities.
In total, I’ve now delivered over $54 million in funding for the Fifth District since taking office. These investments ensure that local organizations and leaders have the resources they need to create meaningful change where it matters most. |

Lowering Healthcare Costs for Families
The Biden Administration made significant strides this year to lower healthcare and prescription drug costs, and I was proud to support these initiatives.
Thanks to the Administration:
● The cost of insulin is capped at $35 per month for seniors on Medicare, ensuring no one has to ration life-saving medication.
●Out-of-pocket prescription drug costs now have an annual cap, providing long-overdue relief for countless families.
●The Inflation Reduction Act gave Medicare the power to negotiate prices for critical therapies. |
Delivering on Student Loan Forgiveness
One of the most significant milestones of 2024 was President Biden's historic action on student loan forgiveness. This year alone, his administration has forgiven over $175 billion in student loans, bringing relief to more than 4.8 million Americans, including $74 billion for over one million borrowers through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (Source).
Back in 2019, I was proud to lead the charge for student debt cancellation alongside Senator Bernie Sanders. This progress makes it easier for borrowers to start families, buy homes, and build a future with minimal debt. |
Championing Bold Legislation
Throughout 2024, I have worked tirelessly alongside my colleagues to advance legislation that reflects our shared values and priorities:
● The Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act: Alongside Representatives Jamie Raskin, Melanie Stansbury, and Senator Richard Blumenthal, I introduced this bill to create an Office of the Inspector General within the judicial branch. This office will investigate violations of the Supreme Court’s Code of Conduct and ensure accountability in our nation’s highest court.
● The No Shame at School Act: Partnering with Senator Tina Smith, we re-introduced this bill to end lunch-shaming practices nationwide. No child should be publicly humiliated for being unable to pay for school meals.
● The Long Covid Research Moonshot Act: I introduced legislation to provide $1 billion annually for a decade to fund research, pursue treatments, and expand care for those suffering from Long Covid.
● The Shrinkflation Reduction Act: I introduced this bill to combat deceptive shrinkflation practices and enhance pricing transparency for consumers. Families deserve to know what they’re paying for and to get what they’re paying for.
● Addressing Violence Against Black Women and Girls: I sent a letter with Representative Betty McCollum to urge President Biden and Attorney General Garland to create an Office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls within the Department of Justice. This builds on my introduction of the Brittany Clardy Act, honoring the legacy of a Minnesotan, Brittany Clardy whose life was stolen by violence. |
Preparing to Fight Back in 2025
Next year will bring new challenges with the incoming conservative super majority, which has already promised to roll back the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve. From attacks on healthcare to threats against our democracy, we know what’s coming. This community has proven time and again that when we come together, we are unstoppable. I will continue to stand up for reproductive rights, defend our climate, protect working people, and combat hate in all its forms.

Looking Ahead
While we face uncertainty, I know the strength and resilience of this district. Together, House Democrats have shown that change is possible, and when we come together, we can achieve so much. I look forward to continuing this fight in Congress in 2025.
It continues to be an honor of representing you in Congress. I am inspired every day by the hope, courage, and determination of this community.
Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful and joyful new year.
In Service,
Ilhan Omar
