The for-profit health care industry has a powerful grip on the U.S. political system, and Big Pharma is a perfect example.
A recent report from Sludge reveals that the massive lobby group Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) dropped millions of dollars last year on political groups to sway policy and legislation in the current session of Congress.
In 2023 alone, PhRMA gave $3.5 million in dark money to American Action Network, a right-wing advocacy group that ran millions of dollars worth of ads attacking Democrats’ efforts to lower drug prices.1
The for-profit health care industry will never stop trying to buy politicians who will do their dirty work by voting against attempts to reform our broken system. This is exactly why we need to get health care industry money out of politics, and it starts with our Patients Over Profits pledge.
We’re asking political candidates and elected officials to reject campaign contributions of $200 or more from the for-profit health care industry. So far, we’ve generated 300 signers, but we need your help to build on this momentum in the new year!
We’re putting together a special Outreach Team to reach out to as many elected officials as possible right after the holidays to ask them to take the pledge.
We’re looking for volunteers who are fairly comfortable using spreadsheets and the copy/paste function of your computer’s programs, and who can devote at least one hour a week to doing digital outreach over a six-week period this January and February.
If that sounds like you, sign up for our Patients Over Profits Special Outreach Team now, and we’ll send you a written guide with everything you need to know plus an invitation to an Onboarding Call in early January to get started!
In solidarity,
Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
