Hi John,
As the year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve accomplished together—and to say thank you.
It’s been a long year, filled with both challenges and victories. Through it all, you’ve been with us every step of the way. Your support—whether it’s signing petitions, sending letters to lawmakers, spreading the word, or donating to help make it all possible—has made a real difference.
This year alone, more than 150,000 members like you sent letters to lawmakers, contributed to nearly 2 million petition signatures, and helped us recruit, train, and deploy over 15,000 nonpartisan Election Protection volunteers – ensuring that every eligible voter could make their voice heard in the 2024 election.
John, it’s your engagement that fuels this movement and drives real change. Here’s just a glimpse of what we achieved together this year:
-
We fought voter purges in Georgia. Common Cause Georgia joined legal action to block the illegal removal of over 5,000 voters from the rolls—protecting every Georgian’s right to cast their ballot without obstruction.
-
We stopped an Electoral College scheme in Nebraska. When special interests tried to rig the system by switching Nebraska to winner-takes-all, our members mobilized to stop it in its tracks, ensuring every Nebraskan’s voice is heard.
-
We won fair maps in Indiana. After decades of inaction, we forced the City of Anderson to redraw its city council districts, giving voters fair representation.
-
We passed National Popular Vote in Maine. Thanks to relentless advocacy, Maine joined the National Popular Vote Compact, bringing us one step closer to ensuring every vote for president counts equally, no matter where you live.
-
We increased polling place safety in Massachusetts. Our team helped pass a bill banning firearms within 150 feet of voting sites, ensuring voters can cast their ballots without fear of intimidation.
-
We expanded language access in California. Nearly 3 million Californians with limited English proficiency will now have better access to voting materials in their preferred language, ensuring every eligible voter can participate in our democracy.
-
We strengthened election security in Connecticut. New laws now protect sensitive voter information, improve ballot tracking, and extend verification timelines—setting a national standard for election security.
-
We restored voting rights in Nebraska. With the passage of LB20, over 7,000 Nebraskans who’ve completed felony sentences regained their right to vote, ending unnecessary delays to participation in our democracy.
-
We helped protect public campaign funding in Florida. Common Cause Florida worked hard to educate voters about Amendment 6, which would have stripped public funding from candidates for key statewide offices. The people of Florida rejected this harmful measure, affirming that no one should have to be rich to run for office.
These victories are proof of what we can accomplish together, but the fight isn’t over. Every step forward reminds us that democracy doesn’t defend itself—it requires all of us to stay engaged, vigilant, and ready to act.
And in the new year, we know the fight to protect our democracy will be more important than ever. Anti-democratic plans like the Project 2025 are already being laid out—threatening voting rights, fair representation, and the principles we hold dear.
That’s why we’re gearing up right now—building grassroots power on the ground in states like Pennsylvania and strengthening our legal and advocacy efforts to face this moment head-on.
Together, we’ll protect and strengthen democracy for generations to come.
Thank you for standing with us this year,
Suzanne Almeida, Vice President, State Operations
and the team at Common Cause
P.S. The biggest impact you can make right now for our democracy is at the state level, helping organizations like Common Cause Pennsylvania who are putting in the work on the ground. Consider making an early year-end gift today >>
