IPA Launches the Rule of Law Initiative

IPA recently launched the Rule of Law Initiative to strengthen evidence addressing crime and violence. With guidance from prominent researchers in the sector, this initiative aims to empower policymakers and practitioners to craft programs that promote justice reform and civilian security. Through knowledge sharing, agenda building, evidence synthesis, and investing in innovations, this initiative represents a robust effort to disrupt cycles of poverty and violence.

Promoting Call-in Health Services to Improve Women's Health Knowledge and Practices in Uganda

In sub-Saharan Africa, health information is often shared in mass media campaigns, but it doesn’t always reach all households. Leveraging high cell phone ownership in Uganda, researchers found that women who received personalized introductions, calendars, and cell phone reminders to use a health hotline boosted their sexual and reproductive health knowledge and behaviors and usage of vital iron supplements during pregnancy. This innovative approach holds promise for improving knowledge in contexts where cell phone usage is high but access to information is limited.

mEducation: Cost-Effective Mobile Tutoring in the Philippines

Researchers: Micheal Ainomugisha, Noam Angrist, Sai Pramod Bathena, Peter Bergman, Colin Crossley, Claire Cullen, Thato Letsomo, Moitshepi Matsheng, Rene Marlon Panti, Shwetlena Sabarwal, and Timothy Sullivan
IPA led an evaluation of mEducation, a phone-based tutoring program in the Philippines developed by Youth Impact. The intervention was highly cost-effective with a significant 40 percent increase in children’s math skills at around US$12 per student. IPA has since been collaborating with Youth Impact and the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement the intervention with schools across the country, reaching 90 schools, 256 teachers, and 1,015 students during the first round. After encouraging results from this round, DepEd has announced its support to implement the program for students needing after-school remedial education.
