I have been a survivor of sex trafficking for five years. In many ways, I’ve moved past that experience: I’m a speaker and advocate on behalf of abused women, and I’ve found stable housing and employment. 

But those milestones don’t mean I’ve reached the end of my journey to freedom. Being a survivor means I’m feeling good one minute — and dealing with trauma the next. And it’s in times like these that I need my community to step in.

I recently learned that my trafficker was found dead. The news threw my mind back to that time when he was all I knew. It’s not easy to explain what I’m feeling, but it goes much deeper than relief that he’s gone. In a way, I feel like I’m mourning him. In another, I feel like a victim again. 

It’s been several years since I’ve been in therapy. But with all these emotions welling up, I know that I need to tap back in now.
