John,

America is facing a public health crisis. This year alone, more than 9,000 people have tragically lost their lives to acts of gun violence and more than 18,000 have been injured.

Any other epidemic resulting in so many fatalities would have the full force of the federal government engaged in combating it.

In February, the House took action to prevent gun violence when we passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. I was proud to co-sponsor this bill, which expanded background checks on all gun sales and would help keep guns out of the hands of people who would cause others harm.

But even after the tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, Mitch McConnell still refuses to bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote. He is more concerned with pleasing the gun lobby than protecting the people he's been elected to serve.

We cannot play politics with people's lives. Add your name to call on Mitch McConnell to bring the background checks bill to the floor for a vote.

We are not helpless in the fight against gun violence. We can take steps to prevent more innocent lives being lost -- and requiring universal background checks is just plain common sense. So common, in fact, that 90% of Americans support them.

Thoughts and prayers will never be enough to combat gun violence -- we need safe gun ownership laws. And until we take action, we will continue to worry about our children at school and in our communities.

I won't stop fighting until we end this epidemic of gun violence. Add your name to stand with me and tell Mitch McConnell to bring background checks up for a vote.

Thanks,

Dr. Kim Schrier
