2024 Monitoring the Future Survey shows persistent nicotine dependence despite meaningful gains in reducing youth e-cigarette use

The 2024 Monitoring the Future Survey (MTF) shows promising signs in the effort to reduce youth e-cigarette use, as the number of students using these harmful, addictive products continues to decline. However, among young people who use e-cigarettes, there are troubling signs of nicotine addiction that must be urgently addressed. The survey, which measures substance use among eighth, 10th, and 12th graders, found that 15.0% of 12th graders, 9.8% of 10th graders, and 5.7% of eighth graders reported vaping nicotine in the past 30 days, and nicotine pouch use nearly doubled among 10th and 12th graders. These findings highlight the urgent need for improved quitting resources, such as Truth Initiative’s EX Program.

Across the country, data show a consistent pattern of disparities in cigarette smoking, highlighting the relationship between tobacco use and various socioeconomic and health factors. While smoking prevalence can vary widely in different parts of the country – 12 Midwestern and Southern states have 50% higher smoking prevalence – the same demographic factors influence disparities regardless of location. These five socioeconomic and health factors must be addressed to help all Americans enjoy healthy lives free from nicotine addiction.
