Virtual conference will
feature remarks from
Coons, Braun and Curbelo

Climate champions who are current and former members of Congress will address CCL’s virtual conference on June 13. Senators Mike Braun (R-IN) and Chris Coons (D-DE), founders of the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus, will give featured remarks.

Former Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) will also give featured remarks. Curbelo founded the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus with Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) in 2016 and introduced the MARKET CHOICE Act, which would have taxed carbon and used revenue to fund infrastructure projects and help low-income households.

Less than two weeks after registration has opened, more than 1,400 have signed up for the conference, “A Community Stronger Than COVID.” The conference will feature numerous breakout sessions on topics covering conservative outreach, state-level carbon pricing, business outreach, developing student leaders, diversity, agriculture and more.

Other news this week:

Concern for climate still high: With the nation’s attention focused on the coronavirus pandemic, the assumption was that concern about climate change would drop off. A new poll from Yale and George Mason University, however, finds that concern about climate change currently matches the same level shown in polls taken before the pandemic hit. Read more.

German CCLers lobby legislators: CCL Germany held their annual conference and lobby days online last week with 35 participants. In the days following the May 10 conference, they met online with 11 members of the Bundestag to push for more ambitious targets in emissions reductions. An additional eight meetings are planned between now and mid-June.

Hang out with Danny Richter: Has your bread baking during the lockdown been a dismal failure? CCL VP for Government Affairs Dr. Danny Richter might be able to help out in Friday’s Hang Out With a CCL Staffer. The hangouts will be going on break after June 26, so there are only a few more chances to participate. Grab your favorite beverage and hang out with Danny at 4 p.m. ET this Friday. Details and upcoming hangouts here.

Students can train to be climate advocates: CCL is offering a 15-week Climate Advocacy Training Program for students interested in learning and applying CCL’s methods for climate action. Participants who complete the program by August 31 will receive CCL’s Certificate of Completion and an invitation to join CCL’s Campus Leaders Program to start a climate campaign or CCL chapter at their school. To sign up, please fill out this Google form by June 10.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Invite your friends, family, and other connections to join you at CCL’s 2020 International Conference on June 13. The event is online. So, for the first time, all CCLers and anyone else who’s interested can easily attend without traveling. Tag your friends or share our posts on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, or send them the registration link via email.

If you have more time: Tune in to a May 25 webinar with professional big mountain skier Angel Collinson. Angel was one of the first athletes to endorse the Energy Innovation Act! She’ll discuss her career as a skier and her passion for climate advocacy on this call, hosted by CCL’s Outdoor Industry Action Team.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more. Browse CCL Community’s Event Calendar to find upcoming events, trainings, and calls you can join.
Grassroots: Youth climate presentations

Since in-person outreach isn’t an option these days, CCL’s youth have been getting creative with their presentations. In four presentations over Earth Day week, the youth from the Silicon Valley North chapter (pictured above) presented to over 100 high school students and adults. They shared about climate change, carbon fee and dividend, and the power of students’ voices. Read more about their efforts on CCL Community.

Youth in CCL’s North Carolina chapters are also taking their presentations virtual. They’re planning a three-part online climate series targeted at other young people, though it’s open to anyone interested. For details on their upcoming presentations beginning on May 23, or to register, visit bit.ly/cclliveseries.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to try what these volunteers are doing, watch or read this training on giving presentations.

Volunteer spotlight on John Doherty: Tacoma CCL volunteer John Doherty is retired, but that has given him time to make a difference on climate change by doing presentations and hosting a radio show called Climate Talk. Read more.

Is the Energy Innovation Act’s fee high enough? Holding global temperature increase below 2C or 1.5C will require a pretty steep carbon price. Jerry Hinkle from the CCL Economic Policy Network looks at two models to determine how H.R. 763 would perform if its fee and rate of increase were applied globally. Read more.
