Dear Friends,
We need your help.
First, some good news! The House adjourned yesterday, as they lacked the members necessary to pass the many awful bills on their docket. This means the radical sex education revamp as well as the problematic library bills are dead! Thank you to all who called or emailed to stop these—you're making a difference.
But the work isn't over!
The Senate is still in full swing. They've been voting all night and are keen on passing a host of bills that would weaken election integrity in Michigan!
HB 6052: Serial (stub) numbers are one of the last remaining barriers to stop ballot vote fraud, yet this bill eliminates the requirement for on-demand-printed ballots to have serial numbers. On-demand printing allows people to vote early and on election day from anywhere (even though our state has no real-time electronic system to keep track of new or changing registrations). With no absentee ballot numbering system to enable the tracking of how many ballots were issued to what jurisdictions, how will anyone be able to challenge fake ballots that have flowed into the ballot stream?
HB 6053 imposes laches of 45 days, meaning complaints on polling places, drop box locations, early voting will be inadmissible less than 45 days before an election.
HB 6055 is an assault on elected local clerks. It takes away local control of elected clerks to administer elections. Instead, 6055 requires a school district “coordinating committee...to designate the clerk responsible for the school district election.”
HB 5551 invites lawfare. It prohibits “an individual from being a member of the board of state canvassers” or “board of county canvassers if that individual has been convicted of an election-related offense.” What is an election-related offense?
