2 crucial updates from our legal team.

ACLU <[link removed]>

ACLU Supporter, while the year comes to an end, our legal team's work is far from over right now – here are two crucial updates from this week alone that you should know about:

* Yesterday, we obtained records from our recently-filed FOIA lawsuit that reveal ICE is actively considering proposals to expand immigration detention in at least six states. Expansion of detention facilities will enhance the Trump administration's ability to carry out the mass deportations they have threatened – and instead of permanently shutting down abusive detention facilities, the Biden administration is paving the way. These records provide critical information for the ACLU's strategies ahead as we continue to fight back.

* The Supreme Court just agreed to hear a case where TikTok's future hangs in the balance – with arguments on January 10. The ACLU and our partners have called on the court to block enforcement of a law that effectively bans TikTok and would force the 170 million people in America who use TikTok off the platform as soon as January 19. As we explain in our friend-of-the-court brief, this law blatantly violates the First Amendment rights of all of us who use TikTok to express ourselves and communicate with people around the world. It also grants the president broad powers to ban other platforms with foreign ownership. We won't sit idly by as the government is given more power to silence Americans' speech online.

These legal actions are just two of the many critical pieces going into our work as we prepare for the fight ahead – not only from our lawyers, but from our policy experts, organizers, and nationwide affiliate network as well.

Your support is fueling all of it, ACLU Supporter. For this, and all you have done, thank you.

More soon,

The ACLU Team
