Hi John,
As the year draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to look back on our achievements in 2024. These were no small accomplishments and we couldn’t have done it without supporters like you.
Here are a few highlights from this year:

Lead Pipe Right to Know Act: Thanks to our advocacy as part of multiple coalitions, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act in 2024. New York State leads the nation in cases of children with elevated blood levels– rates which are five to six times higher than those in Flint, MI at the peak of its water crisis. By passing this law requiring public water systems to identify where they have lead or possibly lead pipes, we can now push for legislation to replace them.
Strengthened Federal Rules for Cleaner Air: In early 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulations lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. These included rules to curb methane emissions from oil and gas operations, mercury and other toxic air pollutants from coal-fired power plants, and greenhouse gases from existing coal and new gas power plants. As part of the Clean Air for the Long Haul coalition, we had successfully advocated to strengthen these rules, especially the methane and mercury and air toxic standards.
Community Composting Partly Restored: Thanks to the tireless advocacy of our coalition and the leadership of City Council Member Shaun Abreu, the New York City Council managed to restore more than $6 million for community composting that New York City Mayor Eric Adams had previously slashed from our city’s budget. It will fundamentally improve waste disposal for all New Yorkers and benefit the environmental justice communities outside of New York City that have historically been burdened with the disposal of our city’s waste.

Liquefied Natural Gas Export Infrastructure Pause: We are happy to report that our advocacy convinced the White House to pause the permitting of pending and future LNG infrastructure. During this pause, the Department of Energy reviewed these projects to gauge their economic and environmental impact on local communities.
Movement Building with the TCTAC: The WE ACT Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center (WE ACT TCTAC) celebrated its first full year of operation, fielding 132 requests for one-on-one technical assistance from grassroots organizations working on environmental and energy related projects in New Jersey and New York. We have engaged 1,900 community members in outreach events across rural and urban communities throughout both states, offering in-person and virtual training to 370 individuals and organizations. And we provided one-to-one assistance for grants to the 96 entities who have requested.
Thought Leadership and Major Media Hits: We appeared in nearly 200 news article this year, including outlets such as the Associated Press, Bloomberg, Reuters, United Press International, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, CNN, PBS News, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, Forbes, Fortune, POLITICO, E&E News, City & State New York, Albany Times-Union, Yahoo News, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, Business Insider, Fast Company, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Spectrum NY1 News, and a host of other outlets that focus on our issues and community. Our staff has participated in more than 130 speaking engagements, and we have hosted more than 75 events. Our weekly email newsletter has an audience of 11,500 subscribers and an average open rate of 35 percent, which is well above average. And our podcast continues to grow its audience, as we produced 23 episodes this year.

There is so much to celebrate for what we’ve done in 2024, but we cannot pause now. Our opponents are planning to rollback our progress in 2025. We need your help to start off the year strong and protect the progress we’ve made. We cannot afford to lose ground to polluters and the fossil fuel industry.
From now until December 31st, all gifts made to WE ACT toward our Environmental Justice Center will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Your impact will go twice as far to ensure that in 2024 we can continue to build on the wins of 2023 and make our vision of a healthier and greener future for our communities a reality. Just $50, $25, or even $10 goes a long way. Will you chip in today? ([link removed])
