Thanks to supporters like you, Orbis and our partner Nayan are helping thousands of tea pickers in Bangladesh access eye care that helps them provide for their families, earning more money than if they didn’t receive care.
There are around 300,000 “gardeners” who do labor-intensive tasks such as plucking tea leaves. Three-quarters of these workers are women, and many belong to indigenous communities whose ancestors were brought to tea estates as laborers.
In a first-ever effort to offer care to this population, Orbis-trained eye care workers delivered eye screenings, free glasses, and more than 700 free cataract surgeries. A previous Orbis study showed how improved eye care increases productivity and earnings for tea pickers in India, lifting many of the workers out of poverty.
