Republicans maintained a majority in the United States House of Representatives this November’s election — but only with a narrow, five-seat margin.

And when we account for the upcoming vacancies of Elise Stefanik, Michael Waltz, and Matt Gaetz, we’re looking at just a two-seat margin: 217 - 215.

Now consider this: The gerrymandered maps in North Carolina flipped three seats held by Democrats. That’s right: Without the seats that Republicans won through a brutal, egregiously partisan, mid-Census gerrymander, Democrats could have won a majority in the U.S. House.

North Carolina is actually a perfect example of why we do this work — and the impact your support can have on fair maps across the country.

The maps drawn in North Carolina following the 2020 Census were some of the most extreme in the country. In fact, the state supreme court ruled that the maps were such blatant examples of partisan gerrymandering that they violated the state constitution.

So the court redrew the maps — and on those new court-drawn maps, voters in the battleground state elected seven Democrats and seven Republicans to Congress in 2022. The maps were fair and representative! A huge win for democracy!

But then, a Republican majority in the state supreme court REVERSED the original ruling and the maps were, yet again, redrawn. These new maps make North Carolina again one of the most egregiously gerrymandered states in the country.

Anti-democracy politicians pursued map manipulation in order to win unearned power — and it worked:

Despite Democratic candidates receiving 43% of the total votes cast for Congress in November, only 4 of the 14 (29%) seats were won by Democrats. That’s a sign that maps aren’t fairly drawn. One piece of good news from the election is that North Carolinians re-elected Democracy Defender Justice Allison Riggs to the state supreme court. We threw our full support behind Justice Riggs in that race because she’s a fair-minded champion of every American’s fundamental rights, including voting rights. And during ongoing rounds of recounts (including outrageous efforts to throw out properly cast ballots), we’ve supported efforts to make sure every voter’s voice was heard.

Justice Riggs’s re-election will ensure that critical pro-democracy leadership remains a force on this massively influential court — and it also prevents yet another extreme partisan voice from joining the court.

We’ll continue to build on this momentum to keep fighting for fair maps in North Carolina — and stop GOP mid-cycle gerrymanders across the country.
