Dear John,
I'm Ryan Hill, the Director of Education Programs here at the Fraser Institute. Our department may often operate behind the scenes, but I truly believe it's one of the most impactful areas of our organization.
Our mission? To educate high school and post-secondary students, teachers, and journalists across Canada on crucial topics they might not encounter elsewhere, like the power of economics, free markets, and individual choice.
And in 2024, we made tremendous strides toward that goal.
This year, we engaged over 900 Canadian high school teachers who will go on to impact over 80,000 Canadian students.
We also engaged nearly 4500 students directly, both in person and online, through our high school and university seminars and webinars!
Our events featured some incredible guest speakers, including Steven Landsburg, who spoke on his book The Armchair Economist, and Yeonmi Park, who shared her personal insights on North Korea from her book While Time Remains: A North Korean Defector's Search for Freedom in America.
Here’s what a few participants had to say about their experience:
"Honestly the student seminar was amazing! I learned more information today than I do in some of my classes. The points I learned today have refined my views in extremely helpful ways. Specifically, the healthcare discussion was really important to me.”
– Student, British Columbia
"I value the Fraser Institute teacher workshops and incorporate the lessons into my classes. I value the resources I receive from the Fraser Institute and use them to further students’ knowledge and understanding of economists of the past. These have been a gamechanger for me as a teacher."
- Teacher, Ontario
But our efforts didn’t stop at seminars. We also provided 45 journalists with economic and public policy education. These journalists leave our programs having a better understanding of the economic way of thinking and complex public policy issues.
We run student essay competitions with cash prizes, offer internships, and even host an annual Student Leaders Colloquium, where students tackle complex economic policy issues!
It’s more important than ever to ensure that journalists, teachers, and students have a deep understanding of economic principles. That’s why I’m so proud of our small but mighty team, and the impact we're making.
Here’s something else I’m proud of: we provide all these resources at no cost to the participants.
We don’t take government funding, which allows us to remain independent and objective. And it’s thanks to supporters like you that we can continue to offer these programs free of charge.
Would you consider making a donation today [[link removed][campaignid]] to help us continue this vital work? Your support ensures we can keep educating future generations on the value of free markets, entrepreneurship, and individual choice.
Thank you for being a part of our mission. Together, we can keep making a difference.
Thank you so much for your support.
Sincerely,
Ryan Hill
