That’s why Common Cause, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and over 100 news media and press rights organizations are urging Congress to pass the PRESS Act.
This crucial legislation would prevent the government from invading journalists’ privacy and forcing them to disclose confidential information about their sources – protecting freedom of the press and allowing journalists to continue seeking out the truth without fear of retaliation. [1]

We rely on a free press to hold our politicians accountable and keep the American people informed on events here and around the world. This makes journalists crucial to maintaining a strong, fair democracy.
That’s why the vast majority of U.S. states and D.C. already have protections similar to the PRESS Act. [1]
John, it's time that we expand these protections to the federal level and ensure journalists in every state are protected. If the press is going to fulfill its responsibility to the people, we must support common sense safeguards that allow journalists to do their jobs.
The House of Representatives already passed the PRESS Act in a unanimous, bipartisan vote – time is running out for the Senate to do the same.
