The Kakataibo people have stewarded the rich tapestry of biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon for generations. Yet, the Kakataibo are struggling for their survival as a people.

A new, multimedia report uncovers a complex web of rampant illegal logging, coca plantations, and mineral concessions that have made this region one of the most dangerous areas for environmental defenders in Peru.

There is rampant passivity – and even direct complicity – at every level of the Peruvian government, forcing Kakataibo leaders to risk their lives to defend the forest, their communities, and isolated villages. Five Kakataibo leaders have tragically lost their lives due to the violence, as others are increasingly facing threats and displacement from their communities.

The struggle for the Kakataibo is a struggle for all who value the Amazon rainforest and the rights of its Indigenous stewards. Through our Amazon Crime campaign, we will continue to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities fighting to hold complicit actors accountable and secure the legal land rights and security of their ancestral lands.
