Road Safety Resolutions for Small Business Owners
Road Safety at Work

Do your company's New Year's resolutions include a commitment to road safety? Unfortunately, driving is the leading cause of traumatic workplace deaths in BC. Over the last 5 years, crashes killed an average of 18 people and injured 1,573 annually.

Road Safety at Work suggests five resolutions you can make to help keep employees safe:

Know and meet your responsibilities
Did you know that any vehicle used for work in BC is deemed a workplace? Check your employer responsibilities.

Check driver licences, provide vehicle orientation
Start the new year by asking employees who drive for a copy of their current licence and abstract. Ensure you've trained them on how to safely use the vehicle they drive for work, as required. Gets tips on checking driving records and driver orientation.

Identify hazards, reduce risks
Regularly identifying and assessing driving hazards is key. Use the RiskCheck online tool. It guides you step by step through an assessment and action plan.

Address critical crash factors
Distracted driving, impaired driving (including fatigue), and speeding are among the leading contributors to crashes. Create and implement work procedures to help prevent them. Use our policy and procedures templates.

Winterize road safety
Winter brings additional driving risks. Ensure your drivers and vehicles are prepared for changing conditions by reviewing tips for safe winter driving with them.
